Study Habits

Are you a college student who is struggling in a certain class or want to improve your grade? There may be a myriad of reasons why you are doing poorly in a specific class: not understanding the material, too much stress, a lot going on in other aspects of your life, or even not put forth 100% effort to do well. While there is no secrete fix for it overnight, improving your work takes time and most importantly, hard work and determination. Don’t worry though because poor grades can be turned around; using these simple strategies you will be sure on your way to boasting your GPA.

1. Visit your professor’s office hours

Your professors are the direct sources about finding out what you need to do in order to improve your grade and do well in the class. Get to know them, build relationships, and ask them questions about things you don’t understand. At the end of the semester, if you have a grade on boarder between two grades, they may give you the benefit of the doubt knowing you took the time to work hard and come to office hours.

2. Get organized

having a planner or calendar of upcoming assignments, quizzes and exams is an excellent way to be on top your schoolwork and help you do better in your classes. If you don’t have a calendar or planner, get one and mark down all upcoming dates during the semester for your class (es). You will see the difference this makes!

3. Go to class

This should be a given, but attending class and paying attention during lecture will help you do well in the class. There should be no excuse for not attending class, except for a severe illness or other emergency. Take notes and jot down important things the teacher says during lecture, and then reread them after class. This is always a good way to meet other students in the class so you can study with them for tests.

4. Form a study group

If you enjoy studying with other people, then getting a big group of students together is a great idea to review material and answer questions that may bother you. There may be students of various skill levels and can be beneficial when it comes to getting a good grade.

5. Rethink your study habits

Do you seem to sign onto Facebook every 5 minutes to check your notifications? Well, then you better change your habits because this could prevent you from studying effectively and efficiently. Head to a quiet place such as the campus library or coffee shop. A good technique I use, is to study for 50 minutes then have a 10 minute break and so on.
