So, You Live At Home

Sometimes, getting that apartment is a few months out. In this economy, posting up in a rent free environment is too good to pass up, and sometimes- despite our best intentions- we end up living at home.

It’s okay. We’re gonna get you through this.

1. Have a Plan

If you’re at home for the moment, make a plan. An honest-to-goodness plan, with back-ups, steps, and a schedule.

The problem with living at home is that it can drive you crazy in a very subtle way; the longer you’re at home, the harder it is to leave. Sure you hate it, but look at all the money you’re saving! How can you move out without a job? And what if you just got a low-paying job but stayed home for a little bit longer, to get some savings? And then, hey, why waste your savings on an apartment? You can stay right here!

Leaving the nest is hard, and returning to the nest can be harder. Solve the yo-yo by having a clear, vocal plan you share with all parties. How long are you staying for? How much money is the nest egg amount you need to leave? What’s your back-up if this next interview doesn’t work out, or the one after that?

When you’re stuck at home, you have to work harder to make sure you aren’t stuck without a plan. Following any way to success will make the whole process that much easier.

2. Don’t Be Home

The simple truth is living at home can drain your spirits. You were supposed to be a world conquerer in your new uCribs approved apartment, so it can be more than a little depressing to be stuck at home.

So don’t be home.

Work at a library. Work at a coffee shop. Go to the gym more than you normally would, which is kind of a good idea no matter what. Stay at your friends places, and stay over at the apartments of attractive strangers. The less time you spend at home, the easier it is to forget that you’re there.

3. Browse uCribs

See what options you have in areas around you. The more tangible you make other apartment options seem, the easier it will be to finally take the leap. Who knows? Your parents might chip in a little extra cash to help you out if you show initiative and come with a few uCrib-approved options.

4. Take Advantage

You’re going to be in your own space soon, so appreciate what you have now.

A real kitchen! A television, maybe with a DVR! Actual living space! A yard, maybe!

Walk around the house and try to prioritize and envision what you want for your next apartment, and enjoy the benefits that you might not have again. Take long showers without roomies knocking. Raid the fridge. Take a deep smile at the clean, empty sink that nobodies left instant noodles in over night, and, lastly, soak in the good life.

Soon you’ll be in your uCribs spot. But until then, living at home can have its benefits.
