Coping Methods for Noisy Neighbors

Noisy Neighbors

Recently, I’ve had to deal with something so annoying it’s not even funny. It made me want to pull my hair out every single day. My upstairs neighbors are literally THE WORST neighbors ever. They stomp around upstairs and argue all. the. time. Here are some suggestions on how to cope with the inevitable annoyance of noisy neighbors while living in an apartment complex.

1. Talk to them

Sometimes people don’t realize exactly how loud they are being. Try politely knocking on your neighbor’s door and voice your concerns in a respectful way. More than likely, they aren’t aware of how noisy they are and will be embarrassed when you call them out (wouldn’t you be embarrassed if you were so noisy that your neighbors woke up at 3 a.m. when you and your girlfriend were arguing?) Communicating your concern is the first way to deal with this annoyance.

2. Talk to the front office (Managers or others that may help)

I hate to complain and I’m sure that the front office workers hate complainers. However, sometimes when there is a problem and you’re literally losing sleep, that’s the only thing to do. Call the front office and explain your situation and if need be, go talk to a manager in person. As long as you’re respectful, they should be able to help you out. Most apartment complexes have a security officer on site and will step in if need be. (Example: If your neighbors fight a lot and sound violent, it is necessary to call the security officer. If you think someone is in immediate danger, you should call the appropriate authroities.)

3. Use ear plugs

I bet you think I’m joking. Well, I’m not. If the noise continues even after you’ve taken the previous two steps, it’s time to start sucking it up and using ear plugs to go to sleep or take naps. Is it annoying? YES. But, it does allow you to get some sleep and dream of better days where you will not be living in such close proximity to other people.

These different methods of coping with noisy neighbors may help you study or get some sleep in your noisy apartment complex. Here’s to dreaming of better days and quiet neighbors.
