How To Spring

spring day

It’s been a while since Spring came along. The intensity of the winter has thrown us back mentally into an eastern and northern ice age but it’s Spring. It really is. And soon, it will be Spring, like, in italics.

Here’s how you do it.

1. Spring Wardrobe

But not how you think.

I’m not talking about your clothes (but do that too) I’m talking about all your things. Spring takes a while to get going, but think like this: when was the last time you had a peach? Or fruit salad you made at home? Or fruit, like, in general?

A Spring wardrobe isn’t just for your clothes; it’s for your life.

Get a haircut. Feel the warm air on your face. Shave your beard. Get a hat with a brim not because you’re hip but because sometimes the sun will give a glare. Remember the sun? It’s back!

Spring! Get prepared.

2. Build It, And They Will Come

Decent speakers are always a good investment for a house. They make hosting and chilling easier and more fun, but better yet, they turn Spring into a “hanging outside with music” situation.

A cooler is a Dad-like item, but you can have drinks outside and keep them cool.

A grill is super needed. Get one. Doesn’t matter if you don’t grill. One of your friends does, and they will come through.

Spring isn’t just the weather. Sometimes it’s a state of mind. If you force Spring, and are prepared for it when the good weather comes, you’re going to reap the benefits. Remember: you can let Spring just happen, or you can happen to Spring. Pick the latter, and grill up watermelon (it works) with barbecue chips and hang on lawn furniture with friends.

3. Plan Your Summer

Summer sneaks on you so so fast. It’s tons of freedom, which is great, and everyone has plans for it, which is also great, but think hard: how many of your Summer plans came through last time?

Sit down and plan them now. Because you’re going to get lazy and tired in the summer. Book a plane ticket, or a bus ticket, or a train, or a “no I’m serious” email thread going in April, and reap the rewards in June. Because planning in the middle of the summer is harder than you remember.

4. Remember The Winter

We get spoiled quickly.

That’s just how we are. We forget the bad to focus on the good, but remember. Always remember this Winter, in all its Polar Vortex brutality. Because we’ve earned this Spring. Let the winter get you motivated, grateful, and ready. Because when it’s 61 degrees in late April, I don’t want to hear complaints. I want to see barbecues and celebrations. Because Spring is the escape from Winter. This Winter was brutal, so the escape should be celebrated just as hard.
