Five Reasons To Love Halloween

Sorry to Buzzfeed you, but I love Halloween. It’s the absolute best, and it’s coming up right now. It’s the 4th of July for Ghosts, the Thanksgiving of Ghouls, and the Arbor Day of Goblins. It is, quite simply, the best.

Let me tell you why.

1. It’s The Only Holiday That Stays Equally Awesome

I don’t celebrate Christmas, but I can vouch- other holidays vary in greatness. Your birthday is an enormous deal as a kid, an enormous deal at 21, and then just kind of a thing. Thanksgiving is good, but can shift on what family members can make it, who’s married who, and as a kid, even at it’s best, it’s boring. Arbor Day is lame. But Halloween? Man, it’s the best. Always.

Think about it. As a kid? Halloween is the best– the absolute best. Costumes, candy, staying out late? It’s awesome.

As an early teen, when everything is “lame” Halloween is cool again. Why? Because you watch horror movies and talk about how lame trick or treating is but you still eat candy. Maybe you even cause mischief. Halloween as an early teen kind of rules.

As a teenager and college student there are parties. There are always parties, but these are special- these are official and everyone is trying to outdo themselves. You can choose any sort of party, and everyone’s going to look good.

As a youngish adult, there is pumpkin beer and maybe a party too- but instead of the wild choice, you just have one quality party, which, as a real adult, is worth it’s weight in gold. An excuse to let loose is awesome, and if it comes with ghosts? That’s just a bonus.

As an older adult, you get to dress your kids up and have an awesome impossible-to-screw-up night as a parent. And again; pumpkin beer.

Halloween is the best.

2. It Can Be Spooky

If you’re into the spooky side of things, Halloween is the only holiday for you. Spooky Arbor Day again doesn’t quite cut it. But if you feel a tingle in your spine, and you see the beautiful fall leaves turn cool and dead, and you feel the chill in the air…well, it can be as spooky as you want it to be. And that’s awesome.

3. Costumes Are Great

Costumes let you be someone else. They let you show how creative you are, or how attractive, or even how lazy. A costume is a joy to wear and to build, or to scramble for and buy. Because, as annoying as it gets, nobody ever complains that it wasn’t worth it in the end. They always enjoy the journey, or the result, and the only people who ever hate costumes end up feeling sad that they didn’t have one and went as “themselves” and, oh geez, I need to get a costume, like, *now*.

Even if you don’t have a costume, someone else will have one you like, either for the right or the wrong reasons.

4. One Time A Girl I Had The Biggest Crush On Was At The Same Halloween Party As I Was And She Had A Super Cute Costume And I Said Hi And She Said Hi And Then She Gave Me A Flirty Smile And Gave Me Some Candy And It Was The Best Thing To Ever Happen To Anyone.

It was M&M’s, guys. Don’t hate.

5. A Last Hurrah For Fall

The final chance for Pumpkin Spice to feel right, the final warning bell before winter (in the Northeast, at least) Halloween lets you appreciate Fall (the best season) one last time. And for that, we praise it.
