Don’t Freeze: Some Advice

don't freeze

No matter where you are, you’ve noticed something. Daylight’s saving’s time has just passed, the days are getting shorter, and with them comes the cold. Even in California, you’ve noticed that the perfect weather is slightly less perfect. In Boston, you’re feeling Game of Thrones style: quite simply, winter is coming.

November isn’t the coldest month, but it’s the first brush of cold that shocks you. Pumpkin spice and pretty leaves are left in October. It’s November, and that means stuff is getting real. Unfortunately, you forgot how not to freeze. So it’s time for reminders.

1. Get Your Coat Now

If you don’t have a good coat- and I mean a good one, not one you’ve had since high-school- now’s the time to get one. During the actual winter, you’re going to be too lazy. You’ll want to wait the winter out with the coat that you have, and while that’s admirable, it’s smarter to just buckle down now.

A good coat is going to change your winter. It’s a purchase you need, and it’s one people don’t really consider. “Toughing it out” with the coat you have sounds admirable, until you really think about it. Would you tough out the summer in a jacket, or would you wear what you needed to? Probably what you needed to.

You may have missed some sales, but if you dig around, you can find one.

2. Know The Rules (And Plan For Them)

In the Northeast especially, it’s important to remember the rules of Winter. Like the ant collecting food for the season (or whatever ants do) it’s crucial to know that winter is coming. And life is going to change.

For example; anyone who lives a seven minute walk away from you goes from “close” to “far.”

That has *huge* implications. A short walk to pick up pizza sounds great, but know this; you’re going to be ordering delivery. Do they not have delivery? That’s super weird, but be aware. Because Winter is coming.

Playing the field and meeting new people is always fun. However, staying in bed with someone and watching Netflix is going to make a lot more sense when it’s too cold to barhop. If you have a second date with somebody cool this week, keep that in mind. And if you don’t, consider asking someone out. Because Winter is coming, my friend. Winter is coming.

3. Check Your Systems

Do you have the supplies you need?

No, you’re not going to be snowed in (I hope) but you will be “cooled in,” where going outside is going to be dramatically less appealing. Do you live in a big house with friends? That’s awesome. If you don’t, well, avoid cabin fever.

Stock up. Make sure you have drinks in your house, as well as basic groceries. Heading out to the corner store is a lot less fun in the cold. Similarly, get the stuff you need to be happy in the cold. For me, it’s hot chocolate mix. Basically, it’s just powdered chocolate-sugar, but let me have this, okay?

Have a warm hat. Everyone needs a warm hat. Meanwhile, nobody needs mittens. Gloves are up for debate.

All in all, check your systems before Winter starts up, because as far as seasons go, it’s their to kick your butt. Try to remember Winter in all it’s freezy majesty, and get that coat. Because this is just a taste: after all 45 degrees isn’t cold. 1 degree is cold.

And Winter is coming.
